QCA has five membership categories. Applicants must apply for the highest category that is applicable to them.

The criteria for the five levels of membership are based on the PACFA training standards and are detailed below:

Student

A person may be admitted as a student member if they are undertaking training in Counselling or
Psychotherapy.

Affiliate

          1. Has professional training and qualifications and is employed using counselling skills but does not otherwise meet the criteria for Associate or higher membership;  OR
          2. Has completed an approved training course in counselling or psychotherapy and is actively seeking employment as a counsellor or psychotherapist;  OR
          3. Is a former Clinical/Provisional/Associate member and has retired from professional practice.

Associate

          1. Has a relevant undergraduate qualification and an accredited postgraduate or equivalent qualification of at least 200 hours of person to person psychotherapy and/or counselling training over a minimum of 2 years which contains a minimum of 10 hours supervision linked to 40 hours client contact;  OR
          1. Has an accredited undergraduate or equivalent qualification of at least 350 hours of person to person psychotherapy and/or counselling training over a  minimum of 3 years which contains a minimum of 10 hours supervision linked to 40 hours client contact.

Provisional

          1. Meets the criteria for Associate membership;  AND
          2. Has 50 hours of supervision relating to 200 hours of client contact, of which a minimum of 10 hours of supervision relating to 40 client contact hours was completed within the training program

Clinical

          1. Meets the criteria for Provisional membership;  AND
          2. Has completed a further 75 hours of post-training clinical supervision relating to 750 hours of post-training client contact, over a period of at least 2 years

Applicants for all levels of membership above Affiliate must also have the following:

          1. A current supervision contract.
          2. A current professional indemnity insurance certificate.
          3. Be currently practising as a counsellor.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

This pathway is open to senior applicants who have extensive experience over many years and who have acquired significant knowledge and expertise through non-formal training.  Such applicants would have commenced practice before accredited counselling courses/clinical supervision were available. Those who wish to consider this pathway are advised to discuss their particular circumstances with the Registrar.

Those relying on overseas qualifications will require a longer processing time.
