The future of the Counselling and Psychotherapy profession in Australia

May 3, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Presenter: Maria Brett

The counselling and psychotherapy profession faces significant challenges as it seeks to establish itself as a recognised allied health profession.  PACFA is emerging as the key peak body for the profession, leading the way on important matters such as training standards, course accreditation, research, ethics and professional development. Better resourced than ever before, PACFA is also undertaking important policy and advocacy work around professional recognition of counsellors and psychotherapists.

Recent significant achievements are PACFA’s Scope of Practice for Registered Counsellors, participation in the Trauma Support Directory, and BUPA provider numbers. Maria Brett will speak on the challenges faced by PACFA and the opportunities for continued growth and recognition as a united professional.

Presenter:  Maria Brett is a counsellor and psychotherapist and CEO of PACFA, the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia. After her first career in the law, Maria went on to be a campaigner for the environment and human rights. Maria was Executive Director of the East Timor Human Rights Centre.  While living in the UK, Maria gained expertise in human resources and organisational management and worked as a trainer in the voluntary sector.  Maria also re-trained as a counsellor and psychotherapist and went on to manage mental health and family services in the UK.

Since returning to Australia, Maria has been Executive Director of the International Social Service Australia, Manager of the Melbourne Counselling Service for The Salvation Army, and has seen clients in private practice. As CEO of PACFA, Maria has overseen a period of significant growth and change as PACFA has developed into a large professional association with more than 3,000 members.
