Online PD – Under the wire: Providing therapeutic support to refugees and asylum seekers detained in Papua New Guinea and Nauru

June 5 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Presenters: Ione Lewis and Paul Bailey

Over 2,000 refugees and asylum seekers have been detained in Papua New Guinea and Nauru for over five years by an Australian Government deal with these countries, including 150 children on Nauru. Health services provided by Australia are inadequate for the needs of refugees, and NGOs such as Amnesty International and UNHCR have found a high level of traumatisation and other mental health difficulties. Therapy4Refugees was founded in 2016, auspiced by a not for profit charity Gifts for Manus and Nauru Inc, which provides phone top-ups, clothing, medications and packages for refugees. We are a network of volunteer counsellors, psychotherapists, social workers and psychologists who work with one or two refugees to support them with the stresses of detention and provide strategies for trauma, sleeplessness and isolation.

This presentation will outline:

  • the needs of refugees in indefinite detention
  • referral pathways
  • our responses to critical incidents such as the 2017 Good Friday shooting in Manus and deaths by suicide
  • advocacy work with NGOs and the Australian government
  • challenges of providing therapeutic support using apps such as Facebook Messenger, Telegram and WhatsApp
  • monthly online case discussions using GotoMeeting and a Facebook closed group for mutual support between volunteers.

Ione and Paul will present case studies of their therapeutic work with clients to demonstrate what works, lessons learned and the challenges and rewards of this long term work.

Presenter:  Dr Ione Lewis (PhD, Grad Dip Cont Ed, B Soc Stud, Dip Psychotherapy) is a Past President of PACFA, and recently stepped down as Research Committee Chair. She has over 35 years experience in working therapeutically with individuals, families and groups, and 25 years of experience as an academic in counselling and social work.
