Presenter: Noeleen Lopes
To begin the Association’s 2018 professional development program, we are excited that the staff of Gallang Place have invited us to their place. Noeleen Lopes and other Gallang Place staff are willing to yarn with us about the work they do.
“Gallang” is a word from the Jagera nation and means “healing”. Permission was sought from Jagera Elder, the late Senator Neville Bonner A.O., to use this word for the counselling service. Gallang Place has as its goal to provide and further develop culturally appropriate counselling responses to enhance the health and well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It services Beaudesert, Logan, Brisbane and North Stradbroke Island.
Presenter: Noeleen Lopes is a Ghungalu woman. After graduating with a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Queensland in 1991 and training, in 1992, as a mediator with the Brisbane Alternative Dispute Resolution Centre, Noeleen went on to establish Gallang Place Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation in 1994. She is its C.E.O. She is also the founder of Ghungalou Aboriginal corporation, which works on native title issues. She was a Board member of the Southern Queensland Regional Parole Board from 2001 – 2013 and is a current Director on the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Healing Foundation.
